Competition Newsletter - March 2010

Dear Susanne,

In less than four weeks we will welcome this year's competitors and visitors in Oslo. It's such an exciting time! After nearly two years preparation, it is all coming together and we look forward to one of the most spectacular competitions ever.

If you haven't bought your tickets yet, you'd better hurry. Some concerts have already sold out. And if you can't come to Oslo, you can still be part of the experience via our competition live web-stream.

With so much talent in Oslo, we want to make sure that every competitor is a winner and this year we offer even more prizes and opportunities to the competitors.

We also have some very exciting news about the competition's future plans and an update on our 2008 1st Prize winners who will both be in Oslo as well.

And for those of you who are interested in learning more about improvisation and why it's part of this year's competition repertoire, join Henning Kraggerud's introduction to improvisation.

The 5th of February 200 years ago was Ole Bull's birthday and we will celebrate it in style in April.

We are also experimenting with Facebook. Be part of the experiment and help build a global community of Menuhin Competition Fans.

So much for now - and with time flying as it does, I look forward to seeing you in Oslo.

winnerEveryone is a winner!

For us, the Menuhin Competition Team, it's hugely important to make the competition a very special experience for everyone taking part. Menuhin himself never really liked competitions so this is really about making music, learning, meeting other young talents and getting the most out of 10 days in Oslo.

Everyone chosen to come to Oslo is already a winner. We have more competition prizes than ever before. From the actual money prizes and special awards to instrument prizes, concert opportunities, scholarships and for the first time - an audience prize.

But not only finalists shall be the winners. Competitors not going into the finals, will have the opportunity to take part in masterclasses with the jury and they will be invited to play recitals and concerts throughout Oslo.

Callum SmartIt's great to see that our competitors are as excited as we are: "I am hugely excited to have been accepted for the Menuhin Competition, and cannot wait to join the other violinists in April. To come to Oslo and meet some great musicians will be a fantastic experience. I am counting down the days already!" Callum Smart

MusicConnectsMusic Connects! Keeping you busy in Oslo

Oslo HostsEvents for all ages, musical tastes and interests will keep you on your toes in Oslo. Alongside the competition rounds and jury concerts, the Oslo hosts have created a huge programme of concerts and an impressive array of educational events and activities.

From yoga inspired "Vibrations" every morning - Yehudi was a great fan of Iyengar yoga - to "Dialogue & Soup" lunchtime dialogues, numerous concerts and masterclasses all the way to late night jazz sessions - there is definitely something for everyone.

The hub of many events, including all competition rounds except for the Senior Finals, is the Norwegian Academy of Music. It will also host the spectacular Ole Bull Project.

With "Music Connects" as its motto, all partner organisations clearly show that Oslo is an incredibly musical city.

OleBullBirthdayHappy birthday Ole Bull!

Ole Bull's violin200 year ago, Norways most famous violin virtuoso Ole Bull was born. His anniversary has inspired several elements in this year's competition. From including his works in the competition repertoire to making one of his violins a focal point.

The Ole Bull Project by Christophe Landon will bring violin makers from all around the world and their copy of Ole Bull's Guarneri del Gesù to Oslo. See, try and play or discuss the copies with makers and experts or simply enjoy listening to them in a special concert "A Tribute to Ole Bull" to pick your personal favourite.

And if the Oslo experience of Ole Bull's works and instrument have made you curious to see and hear more, consider visiting the Bergen Festival 26th of May - 9th of June 2010. It will include the The Ole Bull Celebration with concerts and an exhibition showing Bull's original Guarneri del Gesù. It will be a unique opportunity to see and hear more of Ole Bull's music, and the Menuhin Competition Senior winner in recital on Thursday 03. June in the beautiful former home of Edvard Grieg.

WebstreamCan't make it to Oslo? Follow the webstream!

Violin close-upHugely popular in Cardiff, we have again asked our hosting partners to create a live web-stream of the competition rounds.

The stream will be facilitated by a film and technical team from the Norwegian Academy of Music.

A seperate streaming media site is under construction; our Norwegian partners are working hard on it. To view the stream, simply come to our website and follow instructions on our home page (to be published nearer the time).

Once we know who is performing when - the order will be drawn by ballot on the 16th - we will put a performance timetable on our site. But if you miss a live performance, don't worry, there will be an "on demand" function to review previous performances.
