I sat back and could only gasp with amazement at some of the performances I heard in Oslo. [...] The technical capability of the contestants was phenomenal, far higher that you’d find in, say, the BBC Young Musician of the Year.
Michael White, Telegraph, 27 April 2010
In a radio interview I was grilled about whether competitions can ever be good for children. I found myself answering with an enthusiastic 'yes', probably far more eagerly than I would have a few years ago. [...] What struck me in the junior round was how much the children seemed to be enjoying the experience and performance.
Ariane Todes. The Strad, June 2010
The Menuhin Competition is an arena for some of the most prodigious violin talent in the world. [...] It is fitting that the competition dubbed "the Olympics of the violin" will move to the previous Olympic host country.
Claire Jackson, Muso, June-July 2010
For me the Menuhin Competition in Oslo has been a cathartic experience... I am not referring to the volcanic explosion, but to the fireworks of music, of ideas and to the roller coaster of emotions that my friends and I have experienced during these 10 extraordinary days! I came with the hope of winning a prize and I went back with a lot more: an understanding of music at a different level, enhanced by the Jury’s Masterclasses, and friends from all over the world, with whom to exchange ideas and experiences.
Laure Chan, Junior Competitor 2010
The Menuhin Competition was such a great experience. I was thrilled to be there. I liked the atmosphere of the competition a lot, because there was no sign of competition between the competitors. I made a lot of friends. I liked everything in the competition. The whole thing was the greatest experience I ever had in my life.
Kerson Leong, Junior Competitor and Junior 1st Prize winner 2010
The competition was such a great first experience, and everybody was so warm and welcoming in the Menuhin Team! Also, I had a lot of fun and had great chemistry with my pianist, trio members, orchestra and conductor. Meeting and watching performances of so many peers who are all amazing, and meeting them all in one place was quite overwhelming but interesting and so much fun!
Anna Lee, Junior Competitor and Junior 3rd Prize and Audience Prize winner 2010
The Menuhin Competition 2008 had extensive coverage in national, regional and international media. See and read some selected articles underneath.
Note that the individual articles are quite sizeable documents and take a while to open when you click on them.
"What Menuhin did like was encouraging young musicians, so
he conceived his event with two special features: first that it would be more a
festival than a contest, and second that it would be for young
players."
