Some of our favourite things from the Violin Channel Menuhin Competition festival!
On October 16 and 17, our friends at the Violin Channel hosted an exclusive Menuhin Competition festival! The two-day event was filled with previous Competition performances, interviews with jurors, laureates and guest artists, and more. We’ve rounded up some of our favourite stories from the festival to share with you.
Oslo 2010 Laureates Reunion
Join Angelo Xiang Yu and Kerson Leong as they reunite 10 years after the Oslo 2010 Competition to reflect on their experiences and remember the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajökull that disrupted the journeys of multiple competitors.
What are jurors really looking for?
Dong-Suk Kang, who has served on our jury multiple times, most recently at the London 2016 Competition, speaks to the Violin Channel about what he looks for in a competitor. His most important insight? As a juror, Dong-Suk hopes to watch performers who have something individual to say.
Inmo Yang in Conversation with Miriam Fried
Inmo, winner of Senior 2nd Prize at the Austin 2014 Competition, sat down to interview his teacher and hero, Miriam Fried. The two sat down to talk about Miriam’s life, insights and advice she would give to young musicians – along with what questions she’d ask Bach, what has kept her busy during lockdown and some of the great influences of her life.
How did the Menuhin Competition change your life?
Laureates including Ning Feng, Simone Lamsma and Callum Smart reflect back on how the Menuhin Competition changed their lives.
“The Menuhin Competition was a deep learning experience for me. It was a myriad of personal firsts: my first and only international competition (scary!), my first experience playing a concerto with orchestra (very scary!), and my first time in China (fascinating and delicious).” – Alexi Kenney, Beijing 2012
AMA with Jennifer Koh
Soloist and champion of contemporary music, Jennifer Koh, participated in a special Ask Me Anything session. She covered all kinds of topics including her own memories of being a Menuhin Competition participant. She also treated us to some live playing – it’s definitely a fascinating watch!
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the jurors, laureate, participants, our friends at the Violin Channel and everyone who watched from home. You can continue to enjoy the festival online on the Violin Channel Facebook page and YouTube channel.
