The Menuhin Competition is thrilled to share the exciting news of Simon Zhu’s recent performance at a prestigious London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) gala event. Simon, who won the 2nd Prize in the 2021 Menuhin Competition Richmond, had the immense honor of performing under the baton of Sir Antonio Pappano at The Guildhall in London. This private evening for donors, attended by King Charles III, marked the launch of the LSO’s 2024/25 season and celebrated the orchestra’s 120th anniversary.

The 23-year-old violinist from Munich played the first movement of Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 1 on the legendary 18th-century violin, Il Cannone. This extraordinary instrument, renowned for its powerful and resonant sound, was once owned by the great Niccolò Paganini and remains one of the most iconic violins in history.

Reflecting on this once-in-a-lifetime experience, Simon shared:

“It was a surreal experience for me. To be able to play on one of the most prized violins of all time with the London Symphony Orchestra, one of the best orchestras in the world, under Maestro Antonio Pappano, and in the presence of His Majesty King Charles III, is still a little bit unbelievable to me. I think this memory will stay with me forever.”

Simon recounted the moment he stood on stage, with King Charles directly in his view:

“There was a two-minute introduction from the orchestra, so while I was just standing there, I reminded myself not to stare at His Majesty. But when I met the King, he was so nice, kind, and genuinely interested in me, which made me feel so happy and excited!”

Simon expressed gratitude for the opportunity to be part of such a significant event in one of his favorite cities, London, and hoped that the audience enjoyed the performance as much as he did.
